I've been shaving regularly for 6 years with the grain and I've never had any serious nicks or cuts, not even when I started out. (Probably because I was so paranoid.) I get a cut maybe once every 6 months or so on the mons pubis and that's because I'm going too fast. Even then, it's not bad enough to bleed. Going against the grain almost always guarantees red bumps and itchies, at least in my experience.
And for those who don't know where the mons is:
NOUN: Inflected forms: pl. montes pubis
A rounded fleshy protuberance situated over the pubic bones that becomes covered with hair during puberty.
