I can figure that out. I did turn off (uninstall?) some drivers at Dell tech support's instructions, basically sound and video if I recall. I'll look into locating a portable network card while I'm getting some RAM for this poor machine.
I really appreciate the feedback, I know how frustrating helping people who are talking way out of their element can be.
Besides, I can always use the fire-axe in the hall to "reformat" if the problem persists
