I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that older people are gradually becoming more comfortable with various technologies, either through desire, or forced choice due to employment.
Once a certain level of comfort is established, perhaps some of the older folks elect to explore the world of gaming?
I agree that the stats in this article could be rather sketchy, but the growth of gaming is an interesting phenomenon just the same, as I've watched it through the eyes of my children for the past 15 years.
