unfortunately i don't think that "removing IE from windows components" actually removes the program. it says that it 'removes access from the start menu'
you could try repairing the entire windows installation, booting off the XP disc. (??)
i agree that this is the perfect opportunity to ditch smelly old IE!! ;-)
