The Fleeting Now
The Fleeting Now
As I sit here at my desk, I’ve contemplated many things. And now I contemplate again.
______________
The clock ticks, the seconds go by.
A second ago is the past.
The current second is the now.
And the next second is the future.
We exist in the now.
But do we live in the now?
We are always thinking; remembering the past.
When we do that, we live in the past.
The past carries our memories and our regrets.
The memories are fond; the regrets are harsh.
Yet we insist on living in the past.
Even though we cannot change the past.
But when we are not in the past, we plan for the future.
When we plan for the future, we are living in the future.
The future carries our prosperity and our destruction.
We cannot foresee what the future will bring.
We can only know the future will come.
And we can only hope to influence the future.
Between switching from the past to the future,
Do we ever live in the now?
Do we appreciate the moment as it happens?
Or do we wait until the moment has expired and live in the past again?
Can we live with the moment we have?
Or do we go to the future and plan for the next moment?
These are the questions I have.
The questions of a fleeting now.
