Regardless, the original carrier knows the ESN. If the phone is reported as lost or stolen, and you register the phone with a carrier, you're busted.
The carrier can cross reference the phone to the owner using the ESN or equivalent. I'd just drop it by the nearest cellular store that handles the brand.
