Gasoline rainbows

So, I was sitting next to a dirty creek the other day, and this question crossed my mind.

Why does dilluted gasoline (and petroleum products) seperate into chains of purple and red. That is, when I mix gasoline into water, why isn't it just one shade? What causes those neat rainbow effects?

Inquiring minds want to know.
