dont bother..
Linux is very bad if you need to be "plug and play" because of time constraints. Time spent looking for accurate documentation or installing/compiling things to tweak your machine to your liking is unproductive when you have a paper due in an hour.
Though in your case.. maybe your porblem is the HP hardware?
