A retired carpenter in central Portugal plans to be buried in a wooden replica of his Mercedes 220 CDI dream car which he built over the past year, the Lusa news agency said.
"It is small on the outside, but roomy on the inside," Jose Gomes said at his home in Ilhavo, located some 120 kilometres north of Lisbon.
"It is ready to depart to the other world, but the later that happens, the better," the 69-year-old said.
The wooden Mercedes is only half as long and only one-third as wide as the original, but includes the famous star-shaped symbol of the luxury car brand on its front hood.
Mr Gomes said the car-shaped coffin would allow him to go out "in great style" as he has always wanted.
The former carpenter was born to a poor family but found success after he set up a woodwork shop three decades ago with money earned during an 18-month stint in France as an illegal immigrant.
