In no way is this a good practice, but usually if I want to delete a stubborn partition, I'll grab a linux install cd, throw that in, and wait till it gets to the partitions. Usually, with that, I can get rid of any partition and create any partition that I want. And heck, you're already on the first steps of a linux install, so why not go the rest of the way? =p
