You shouldn't have to pay much to fence.
About 30 dollars for a USFA membership, and 120 dollars for a starter set w/ an electric weapon, mask, jacket, body cord, etc.
Don't bother paying for private lessons, most of those are scams unless you are already a really good fencer trying to get an edge.
My fencing team (in Boone, NC) holds several tournaments each year, and if you get into fencing, it would probably be worth your while to drive over to them. Our fencing community is really nice and hospitable. Other clubs put us up and party with us when we go to their tournaments, and we are more than happy to return the favor.
