5 Adults Cuffed in Baseball Brawl

Five teen baseball players and five adults, including coaches and parents, were arrested after a fight following a baseball game in east Cobb County.

It happened Sunday night during a tournament between teams from east Cobb County and Montgomery, Ala.

It was a semi-final game and the Montgomery team was facing elimination after being down 10-0 in the fourth inning.

Umpires said the fight broke out after a call at second base. Apparently, the second basemen from Montgomery -- upset with a call -- threw his glove at the umpire and then pushed him. The benches then cleared. Shortly after that, some parents came out from the stands.

The arrests soon followed

Four of the five 15-year-old teenagers arrested were from the Montgomery team.

“Most of them were arrested for misdemeanors…there was one juvenile who was arrested for aggravated assault for bringing a baseball bat into the fray,” said Cobb County Police Cpl. Brody Staud.

The teens, excluding the one who was charged with aggravated assault, were all charged with public affray.

Police said the 15-year-old Montgomery player who was wielding a bat was tackled by one of the parents from his team before anyone was hit with the bat.

Of the adults, David Swanson, 40, of Woodstock, Ga., was charged with battery after breaking 36-year-old Ray Ogle’s nose. Ogle, the Montgomery team’s manager, was also arrested.

The manager of the East Cobb team, 28-year-old Anthony Dye, parent Veronica Jefferson, 37, of Ala. and Bradley Blakey, 40, of Alpharetta, Ga., were also arrested.

All were charged with public affray.

The tournament was canceled after the fight.

“It’s an unfortunate incident that impacts all of East Cobb baseball. There is no reason for us to proceed playing baseball when we’ve had a setback like this,” said Chuck Whitmer, who runs the East Cobb Baseball Association.

I am so sick of reading about parents doing this sort of thing. I'm only twenty-five, but I can't even recall parents screaming discouraging remarks at youth games, though I'm sure they were made in private. Let alone beating people.

So, what, if anything, can be done to stop this disturbing trend? I do think posting mugshots on the local news website is a good start.
