So the PIG came today...
The PIG is a highly touted plate carrier distributed through Skdtac. Some of the benefits include a vented back channel, the ability to wear the plates higher up, a lot of modularity (ability to mount packs, slings, different cumberbunds, side-plate modularity) and it's reputedly very comfortable.
(Ignore the rambo knife).
You were right about the floppy cumberbund: These cumber can have plates added to them through velcro pouches (a securing cord can also run through the eyelet). Since SMEs say side plates are useless, I'll listen to them.
The LBT plate carrier pretty floppy too:
Here you can see the vent channels along the back:
The fastex clips can be mounted very high up. Here, the female end of the connector is mounted really far back so that the front plate rides right below the suprasternal notch (where the collarbones meet right under the neck).
It also sits a good bit higher on my back. Exposing less of my spine.
Be advised: The rear plate pocket is SPEAR/Operator cut. My squarish back plates had a harder time fitting in the rear pocket.
The PIG's ability to accomodate large plates means that the front plate pouch is large, so large that when I square up and punch out my arms (when shootin a pistol) or get behind my carbine, my arms will run in to the sides of the plate pocket. In other words, it's a little too big.
Verdict:
If you have a solid plate carrier, I do not think the PIG represents such a leap forward in comfort and usability to warrant replacement. The shoulder straps are nice and wide and run down through the back, thus distributing the weight of the plates a little better than the LBT 6094. I'm going to test and evaluate the plate carrier, but I may end up sticking with my LBT 6094.
