I have a hiatal hernia (another potential problem, if it came on suddenly), which was causing me acid reflux. I was on Prevacid (prescription) for 6 months to control it, but lost 55 pounds, changed my diet, etc. No longer need the Prevacid, can eat anything I like, but more than 3 drinks in a night was risky even with the antacid. You can also try raising the head of your bed at night.
A hiatal hernia is where part of your stomach comes up above your diaphragm. Then the valve that controls the top part of your stomach might not function as efficiently, especially when you're lying down. Mine was diagnosed through a doctor ordered chest x-ray.
