If marketing has done anything, it has shined a very uncomfortable light on what it is that people are really interested in. While people like to think that we have varied and intelligent interests and have no need for shallow and childish dramas, the truth is that the #1 show on television is mainly a side-show of people who think they can sing but can't. I regularly bemoan SyFy's ghost shows, but the fact is they gain substantial ratings. 24 news is more popular when it reinforces our beliefs and appeals to our emotions. We get the media we want, whether we think we want it or not.
