I think one major part is our society by a large part expect men to work their own way through college and women get it paid for.
I have a twin sister, and she got all 4 years and graduate school paid for by my parents. My dad told me when I was 10 that I had no choice in going to college but he wasn't paying for it. So much of my time through I had 2 jobs, and logically had MUCH poorer grades than my sister.
My parents definitely do not like my sister better, they've always been very fair. I also understand the economic point that they couldn't afford both of us simultaneously, but I've always wondered why I was set forth to foot my own bill.
Unfortunately this means I have a bachelors degree but due to my poor grades might never make it to graduates level, while my sister got it with no problem and it was paid for by my parents as well.
I also saw a lot of this while in college, I knew very few women who actually worked their way through college and a whole lot of men. Don't get me wrong, I knew women who worked WHILE in college, but that's completely different than working THROUGH college.
