67 mustang tranny w/o reverse

okay, so i went to take my 1967 mustang to the mechanic for inspection, when hes done, I'm told i need a headlight, and.... a transmission. apparently when he went to test reverse it acted like a neutral. all 3 forward gears function fine.
i had just had reverse, (i pulled out of a 45 degree driveway, nose down and it pulled fine. ) I checked the fluid, (several times), the linkage, the servos are new and confirmed to work with an air test, i also pulled the VB to clean it, and noticed there is no check balls at all but otherwise things looked ok, i pulled one of the valves and tested the motion, since everything except the (missing) check valves, i put the mess back in the car and tested foward, when the car rolled forward, i put it in reverse and it started working, but after a few mins it became neutral again, so my question is what would cause reverse to suddenly stop working with no warning, then start again with a (semi) clean VB then disappear again with no noise. and if anyone has one, is it possible to find a diagram of the VB, and where (if they are missing) the check balls go.
Thanks for reading..
