I sort of agree with Walt, and certainly with GreyWolf.
The idea of nipping it in the bud as it happens,
or diffusing it if you see its going to happen
is excellent, best done in a subtle manner,
where no one has to lose face if possible.
I think this is good advice for the would-be victim, too.
