The Narberth Hoard - My Metal Detector Story by BadNick
About 24 years ago, my then wife, now my ex, apparently lost a couple of her rings including a diamond engagement ring and a diamond anniversary ring, together worth way over $5000. We couldn't imagine how they were lost. I checked all the drains in the house and anyplace else we could think of, but nothing turned up.
Over a year later, my daughter, who was ~7 years old at the time, came running into the house from our back yard "mommy, daddy, look what I found". It was one of the lost rings! She noticed a shiney little speck in the dirt path along one side of our yard and as she dug out the item, it was this ring. So we looked all around to see if we could find the other ring, but nothing turned up. We decided to rent a metal detector as a last ditch effort. After scanning our yard and finding some very old, large nails, we eventually got a buzz and when we dug down a little over an inch deep in the dirt, we found the other ring! This dramatic find has come to be known as the BadNick Family Hoard. Local historians, and Mr. & now ex-Ms. BadNick have theorized that years ago when Ms. BadNick was getting washed clothing out of the washing machine and ready to hang it on the clothsline in the yard, she removed both rings. Then as she carried the basket of clothes into the yard, she held the rings in her hand while grasping the laundry basket. Upon entering the yard and placing the basket down, she "forgot" that she had the rings in her hand and simply let them fall without realizing it. With rain and children and dogs playing, the rings became buried until this startling find by Baby BadNick.
The End.
