They started going around thinking they were somehow different from the Yankees. Both teams outspend every other team in the league. As for Papelbon, you can't be perfect forever. He threw 26 scoreless postseason innings before he finally coughed one up. Even Mariano Rivera lost a playoff game.

The Sox could spend more if they wanted too, the difference is that Boston actually tries to cultivate their young players and their farm system. While the yankees have been better in that regard, there are only a handful of teams that cultivate position players and pitchers out of their farm system as well as Boston does. Pedroia and Youk have decent money contracts now, but Papelbon and Ellsbury don't.
It doesn't matter what the yankees do, I'm still going to hate them forever
