Heh, two-fold is generous... they made many more mistakes than that.
That's because the person who took over NBCs programming didn't support the series in the first place, so she's happy to see it go. Mistake isn't really the proper word, because I'm sure she knew exactly what would happen to the show.
The only reason they even bothered to air all the episodes is because they cost so much, otherwise I'm sure she would have been happy to just cancel it after the first few before they moved it to summer.

EDIT!!...
Appropriately for this series, I am pretty sure the following is not true, but I will believe it because it makes me feel good, and I will act on it because it reinforces that belief which makes me feel good.... and maybe, through divine providence (or, rather, a mixture of coincidence and the results of human action), Kings will be saved!

Why Did NBC's 'Kings' Fail? (Or Not)
Friday July 24, 2009
I had the good fortune of going to an advance screening of the premier for "Kings"--a TV show based on the Old Testament story of David and Goliath and the succession of kings that follows--with the cast and writer, Michael Green, available for Q&A afterward. It was fantastic. And so were all the episodes that followed.
About mid-way through the season, I received an email from Michael Green who was writing to all the bloggers and reporters who had supported the show, thanking us for the good reviews, but informing us that, while the show would play out its full first season, that we would not see a second--the show had been canceled.
I felt beyond surprised and extremely disappointed.
Not only does the series have fantastic actors and looks amazing on-screen, it has something to please everyone: drama, romance, conflict, politics, war, a dash of fantasy, and, of course, all sorts of amazing, well-played out religious allusions.
This Saturday, July 25, the season finale runs at 8 p.m. All the episodes are available to watch online--and I can't recommend them enough. It's one of the best shows I've seen in years. And apparently, as its fan-base has grown over the second half of the season, NBC is now considering (emphasis on considering) ordering up a second season. Apparently, rumor has it, Kings is now on the bubble.
So my advice: Save Kings! If you haven't seen it, go watch. You won't be disappointed. You'll be riveted.

Kings is now considered on the bubble, leaning towards cancellation. The show has picked up a pretty good fan base in the second half of the season.

It was announced that it was canceled back during the mid-season. If you read the link that is posted up top, NBC has apparently noticed a cult following developing with Kings and has it "on the bubble" for a potential second season. Yes, they did cancel it. But due to a growing following, NBC is considering giving it another season. Will it? I highly doubt it. But anything is possible.

While this is a good sign, I highly doubt NBC would "risk" it. NBC once had the balls to take a risk on new and provocative shows. Not so much nowadays. If it ain't a reality show or if it ain't a show that takes place in a hospital, nobody wants it anymore.

The most interesting of all...

Perceptive people no doubt noticed that NBC's ads stopped billing the final episode as the "series finale" and instead referred to it simply as the "finale". Likewise, the Kings web site on NBC.com referred to it as the "SEASON finale" (not series) and the DVD is now listed as "Kings - Season One," not "Kings: The Complete Series."
These changes signal that NBC, at the very least, is considering bringing Kings back in some form on some channel. I hope to God they do decide to renew it. Kings is the best show on television.

To be quite frank i am not holding my breath at this ever coming back. I feel that NBC gave up on this show months ago. Shame really as it's pretty good IMO.
I don't think there'll bring it back. I have read on other forums that the set pieces and costumes have been sold off. Another thing is that it's a very expensive show to produce and the ratings are too low.

Yes, Kings was cancelled awhile ago. But someone at NBC is re-thinking the decision since every episode brings in new viewers in a crappy time slot. There is a SLIM chance it CAN be saved. They can reverse their decision.
E-mail NBC.

It has a following b/c we know when it comes on now. They didn't put it on extended hiatus, move it to 3 different time slots, and screw the viewer every week wondering where the show was. It caught a second wind purely based on the fact that it had a stable time slot.

If Kings gets another season, you can bet it will be a short one. NBC will not fund a full season.

Know what.. as much I'd love a full season.. I'll take a miniseries that will complete the story. This is a GREAT show and I hope it gets the ending that Deadwood never got.

Poor Ian seems to get parts in series that go boom.
Deadwood was supposed to have a series ending movie or 2 but didn't.
Neither will Kings.

I noticed all [the advertising and DVD changes] as well. This has given me hope I never thought I'd feel again. I was so sad after finishing the finale, thinking that there would be no more "Kings."
I'll email them, and get my family and friends to do the same. Everyone else should as well. And everyone should also buy the DVD of this season if they can afford it. Heck, buy a few and give them to your family and friends for Christmas and birthdays.
I wonder if they are waiting to see how the DVD sales go -- maybe they'll renew it as a mid-season replacement.
This is assuming that there's even a chance. But I like to think that there is.

Even though I'm in Canada, I've been mesmerized by this show from the beginning - you all know why.
I'll e-mail NBC, for sure. But, where exactly? I'm asking about a person, division, or office.
Thanks!

That's the official Kings forum at NBC - poke around a few threads over there and you'll find more info.

So.
I am not normally one to advocate for a TV show... there aren't many shows worth it. Kings is worth it. The original Star Trek was brought back by a rather small letter campaign. We live in different times, and TV (and especially Kings) is much more expensive now, but let's try. E-mail NBC.
CALL NBC. Send snail-mail letters to NBC. Post in NBC forums. Buy the DVDs. Finally, show Kings to friends and family and have them watch on Hulu (where NBC can see every view), and when they finish have them write e-mails, send letters, and call. Each of us has a responsibility to do all of these things... not just because we enjoy Kings, and not just because actors like Ian McShane deserve to continue with a job, but also because it is our duty as television viewers to promote the betterment of the medium!
If that's not enough hyperbole to get you into action, I don't know what is. Write/call/watch/buy away!

ANOTHER EDIT...
A comment on the beliefnet blog suggests including a butterfly in the letters to NBC. I like it! Can we start an official butterfly campaign?
