Well, personally, I don't point out spelling errors to try to discredit a post. While this may be just a message board for people to talk, how you express yourself includes things like proper use of spelling, grammar, and word choice. If a post is rife with errors, it can reach the point of distraction, or mar the poster's ability to convey his or her point.
If you want to address people's tactics with regards to derailment or discrediting, I think it's clear that all are many more significant and effective than petty concerns of spelling. It's something I consider a great deal as well, though I don't think "pet peeve" is the right term. More like a subject of interest. Anyone can point out poor spelling, and anyone can see if such a response is intended to detract from the person's point. It takes some thought to spot the more dastardly plots.
