1 - I would still like to hear the comp stats. Slow usually = not enough Ram or Processor. Get OS and everything involved whenever asking this type of information. Even if you think it is not relevant
2 - Yes you can manually advance slides and it is the default setting when you make a new slide show. Did you start out with an existing slide show and modify it? You have to clear any presaved timings and clear out the animation effects to reflect only mouse click.
3 - the file that you are using for a background is likly at fault. Can you drag it into an art program and resave it as a smaller file size? I bet it is a BMP and if you made it a jpg you may be btter off?
4 - I would try creating a transparent .gif in your favorite art program and use that for your desired effects. Maybe use borders at first so you can see where they are and then remove them as a final step when you are all done.
