The fictional emergency room at County General Hospital may not close on Thursday night, but its stories will stop being told. After 15 seasons, NBC will broadcast the final episode of “ER” as part of a three-hour event that begins at 8 p.m., putting an end to what Alessandra Stanley calls a “cultural milestone.”
“It’s very odd to say, but it really was time to end,” John Wells, one of the executive producers of “ER,” told Bill Carter in an oral history that was published in Arts & Leisure last month. “It’s ending at a time when we’re all still very proud of it.”
After a one-hour retrospective, the two-hour finale will be shown starting at 9 p.m. Here is how NBC summarizes the episode:
Gates (John Stamos) works on a young teen brought in with alcohol poisoning after playing a deadly drinking game with friends. Dr. Carter (guest star Noah Wyle) opens a new medical facility for the underprivileged in Chicago and some old friends from County General all come to show their support. It’s Sam’s (Linda Cardellini) birthday and Alex (Dominic Janes) and Gates surprise her with a special gift. Meanwhile, Carter works with an intern to save a mother in labor with twins.
NBC will repeat the finale on Saturday night. The series will remain in reruns on TNT.

The episode where Anthony Edwards (Dr. Mark Greene) proposes to Alex Kingston (Dr. Elizabeth Corday) touched me in a way that nothng ever touched me before. If I recall correctly he proposed to her in the kitchen. He said to her, "Will you give me the honor of being your husband?"
