I'm not on speaking terms with my father. For that matter, I've pretty much completely severed ties with that side of my family. After my grandfather died, there wasn't anyone there that I really respected.
I'm also not on speaking terms with one of my maternal aunts, although to be fair the only member of the family who is is my grandfather. Even then, I just think he feels an obligation to his daughter.
I believe that even though you don't get to pick who you're related to, you have no obligation to associate with them.
