You started with Death Note? Although it is a very contemporary comic, it is also quite deep and engaging from what I hear; also, very difficult to classify in terms of broad genre-specifics. I've never read past the first chapter of the original japanese debut of Death Note, but I did see the live-action movie based up on it, and was thoroughly impressed by it.
Hm, I'd like to get to know exactly what you had in mind in terms of action-laden stories, or ones with slapstick humor as the main driving point, but I'd recommend only the ones I've read over the years, such as Dr. Slump and the original Dragonball. I'm sorry I don't have more for you, but I haven't read manga in a long, long time, way before Viz and Bandai were distributing them by the bundles here in North America.
