You do stuff like that all the time if you're in the right bunch with the military. It's fun.
I like Burn Notice. It's a little too Miami Vice for me but the narration is good and the story is amusing.
The MacGyver / James Bond stuff? It's all from the US Army Ranger / Sapper handbooks. Any Charlie-type bearded hero knows this stuff.
I like shows that are authentic, but for obvious reasons they can't be TOO authentic.

Realism isn't necessary for entertainment. I mean, look at the A-Team. It was total fantasy.
