It depends on the context and the victim, doesnt it?
If you get in a fight in a bar and no one has any worse injuries than a broken nose or something - then you'd probably get a police caution or at worst a community service order (in the UK)
If you walked up to a pram and punched and kicked a baby for no reason and severely wounded it and caused lifelong disability, you'd probably get 20 years to life.
This case is somewhere inbetween.
It must be taken into account that he is a man and the victim was female, and also that he didnt simply strike her once, but kicked her several times on the floor.
8 years sentence, serve 4 if he's good - sounds fair to me for the gravity of this assault.
