Luckily, I rarely get gifts I hate and can't recycle.
What I mean is, if I can't use it but it's a nice gift, I'll give it to someone else. Some people don't think it's right to do that but I don't see a problem, why should I keep something that will just be extra clutter in my house? If I have someone I can give it to who I believe will like the gift, I don't see why not.
The only gifts I find hard to recycle are hideous, useless things, like for example, a garishly decorated porcelain figure. I hate those things and can't bring myself to give them to someone else.

Whether we write or speak or do but look
We are ever unapparent. What we are
Cannot be transfused into word or book.
Our soul from us is infinitely far.
However much we give our thoughts the will
To be our soul and gesture it abroad,
Our hearts are incommunicable still.
In what we show ourselves we are ignored.
The abyss from soul to soul cannot be bridged
By any skill of thought or trick of seeming.
Unto our very selves we are abridged
When we would utter to our thought our being.
We are our dreams of ourselves, souls by gleams,
And each to each other dreams of others' dreams.
Fernando Pessoa, 1918
