Hmm, really need more info to answer the question. Do you know what model# and flue size? Preway went under over 15years ago. Some of their stuff could handle pressed (fake) logs and some could be modified to use vent free gas logs.
Depending on the material in the pressed logs I'd probably feel safer using them then gas logs. But before burning anything in it I make sure the chimney was clear of creosote and or any other hazards. Preway's came with snap together chimney sections that usually used vented cool air as insulation, usually in triple tin style (tin pipe, air space, tin pipe, air space and a final section of tin.) Any portion of that chimney leaks or is cracked you could be asking for serious problems.
