"Solid wood only" means that you don't want to put wood chips, sawdust, particle board, artificial wood, treated or coated wood, charcoal, coal, trash, or anything other than solid wood cut from a tree in there.

Hardwoods are generally better than softwoods or new wood, since they won't "snap" and "pop" as often, so you don't have to worry so much about sparks.

Does that make sense?
