A church can only lose their tax exempt status for endorsement of a particular candidate, not a proposition or issue.
I am against prop 8, and echo most of what has been said here.
My parents, on the other hand, are LDS. Just this morning I got a an email forwarded from my mom.

To all who believe in the sanctity of marriage please read and pray and fast with us here in California. There are so many repercussions if this is not passed. For our children and grandchildren--for us help us please! Fran

As part of a multi-faith coalition, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has made a website with lots of information on Proposition 8, along with various video clips that you can watch and ways to get involved. It is Preserving the Divine Institution of Marriage. I strongly encourage everyone to spread the word to everyone they know who lives in California. Urge them to register to vote, and encourage them to learn more about Proposition 8 and the necessity that it passes. We really can take a stand and make our voices heard!

INTERFAITH FAST
There will be an interfaith fast on Sunday, October 12th. People from all over the United States and from all faiths will be joining together to fast for the 'building block of society,' the Family. Religious fasting involves both prayer and fasting (abstaining from food and drink for a period of time).
Whatever your professed faith may be, your faith and fasting can bring forth the powers of heaven. On Sunday, October 12th, and please pray for a positive
outcome for California Proposition 8, that hearts may be softened, that understanding and wisdom will prevail, and that marriage will continue to be defined as between a man and a woman to protect families.
Isaiah 58:6,8-9
Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rereward. Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am.

Nothing I could ever say would convince them otherwise. They are closed to anything other than what they are told by the church.
