No, I don't know any veterans from WWII--my paternal grandfather spent a portion of the war in a German labor camp, though, as he was a young man in the Netherlands at the start of the war, and they forced him to "volunteer." Similarly, my great-uncle got shipped off to Norway to "volunteer". My other grandfather had a physical disability that prevented him from serving. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for him to see all of his friends go off to war when he himself could not.
My SO's grandfathers are too young to have served in WWII, but one of them is a veteran of Korea, and met Grandma at a USO dance. The other was too young even for that!
But I also salute those who served today, and thank them for their service. It means a lot to me and my family, still.
