So you think the gas companies backed prices down in response to consumer pushback? It's not inconceivable, I guess. Although this is the summer wind-down season, when consumption traditionally drops and prices fall with it. I don't really smell conspiracy here.
You're right that opening up to new drilling is the chump's answer. It sounds good for the plebes, and it fits the macho GOP "solve everything with a tool that is vaguely phallic" approach to world problems, but it wouldn't make any real difference, and certainly no difference right now. It would be
awfully good for the oil companies, though.
