Sally Hansen makes a clear strengthener called Hard As Nails that is pretty good.
Get a decent file...the ones that come with clippers are crap and will weaken your nails. Decent emory boards are not that expensive and can be found in any drugstore or supermarket. File in one direction...don't "saw" back and forth when you are smoothing an edge. Sawing weakens them as well.
