Of course everyone is affected by marketing, but it doesn't necessarily influence someone's musical taste. People don't have to watch TV, listen to the radio, or read pop critic's opining about the latest album. I think that it's possible to expand your taste in music given all of the resources the Internet provides, and to avoid direct influence of marketing or the industry. It's inadvertent that someone is influenced by marketing (I can like an album a friend told me about who likes the album because of a review or from hearing a song in an advert) just because money is so pervasive, but I think it's possible to avoid direct effects.
