Without any ideas what else you have read, I'd recommend looking up David Gemmell. Most of his books are standalone, though there are some 'related' books. My favourite is called "Knights of Dark Renown"...just leaning over in my office, I can see it is Copyright 1989 - so not that new
, but still a good read.
Also a big fan of RA Salvatore - the Dark Elf books and others.
