I use a Schick Titanium Quattro and only shave down. Permanent 5 o'clock shadow looks OK on me, so it's no big deal. I do what I can to find $50 in my budget every few months for a Clinique men's shaving kit plus a tube of extra strength face wash. Exfoliant, shaving cream, and post-shave soother come in the kit, and combined with the wash, I can manage a down stroke and an across stroke to get it really close. The best thing I've seen for razor burn is Tend Skin, which clears up 90% of razor burn in about 3 minutes.
