I figured it out, but after playing most of Saturday I dont think I'd suggest this game to anyone I know.
Spent 20 minutes flying towards Quest objective. Attacked by a group of four pirates in faster ships that destroyed me nearly instantly.
Finally took an abandoned ship only to have it attacked by pirates on the flight back to a sector with a shipping dock(hull damage results in lower flight speeds).
Took a second ship, ordered it to follow me. The second ship flies directly into my ship exploding in the process.
The most enjoyment I'd have today is telling people about the kind of bullshit happening to me in this game. I wish there was a facepalm smiley.
