I searched a while, didn't find much, except that on the FAQ page of the place I bought my pot says:

Any sniffing method also runs the risk of leaving water up in the sinus cavities or ear canals which will irritate for some time afterwards or of spreading an infection deeper into the system.

Perhaps a biased source. But seriously, it is really easy, it feels good - water goes in one nostril, boogers come out the other.
Anecdotal evidence: my friend's daughter was getting severe and frequent sinus infections. The doctors told her she needed surgery. A nurse suggested trying a neti pot. She does one pot daily, and hasn't had another sinus infection for two years now.
