I got mine from my mom about two and a half years ago. It grew up really fast with me doing nothing but adding water weekly and adding two drops of a substance called Green Green. Don't know if it came with it, but it was given to me along with the bamboo.
It also depends on the person. My mom has a bamboo plant in her room and it doesn't grow. We tried moving it to my room and it grew pretty significantly within a few weeks. Moved it back, and it stopped again.
