Well I am currently single and haven't dated recently but here's some ideas I give my friends when they ask about dates.
A packed picnic lunch - doesn't have to be anything fancy just take a few different combinations and some rolls and you can make sandwiches, sit at the park and talk. My friends and I tend to do this alot in summer in Kings park though usually we take some footballs or a cricket set along to amuse ourselves.
The beach - Obviously not an option for those of you that are land locked but I'm maybe 30min away from the beach and Australia has some beautiful beaches. All you really need to pay for is the petrol to drive there and back.
Local theatres / clubs - Through my social activities I'm a member of many local groups that do theatre performances, obviously doesn't work for the rest of you but ring around and see what local theatres are showing atm. Also try multicultural centres, there's one near here that does latin dance classes for example, I atleast think that would be a fantastic date but you'd have to be comfortable with the other person being in your personal space.
And abaya it's not about WHAT you cook as much as the fact that you put the effort into actually doing so.
