With something like Batman I am far more capable of watching a movie "on its own terms." Thing is, Star Trek is a specific idea/style/universe, and it's not something people want to see "reimagined." Star Trek is what it is - as opposed to any other sci-fi show - because of Gene Roddenberry's vision. The lack of quality in the more recent Star Trek endeavors is directly related to their lack of adherence to that vision. If Paramount wants to create a sci-fi movie about 20-somethings in space, then go ahead and do it, and I'll be happy to watch it and judge it on its own terms. This is a Star Trek movie, though, and I'm not interested in it being more like some other sci-fi concept. I want to see Star Trek. And Star Trek is not about 20-somethings at the academy, "reimagining" classic sci-fi characters.
The sad thing is...I'll probably see it in the theatre anyway, and Paramount knows this. Then again, perhaps I won't. We'll see what the reception is like.
Like willravel said though...this whole thing is seriously unfair to DS9 and Voyager (and, worse yet, to TNG). If nothing else, the TNG crew deserves a proper send-off. The end of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was a really great way to say goodbye to the TOS crew...signatures in the credits and all. I want to see that same kind of respect given to the TNG crew. After all, TNG is arguably the best of the Star Trek series.
