Paul Haggis talks more on Bond 22, confirms screenplay is not based on Ian Fleming story
More details about the 22nd James Bond film have surfaced in another interview that writer Paul Haggis gave (this time to Collider.com) on his press junket for his new movie "In the Land of Elah".
In addition to yesterday's reports, Haggis has confirmed that Bond 22 is not based on any Ian Fleming story, but some of his ideas.
Q: Could you talk a little about working on James Bond?
Paul Haggis: I’m on page 22. I’m not writing it today because I’m here, but I was writing it up until 8pm last night. It’s a lot of fun. It’s a whole different set of muscles. It’s something I was really concerned about doing because I liked Casino Royale so much, I had such fun doing it and I thought I could only fail by trying to do it again. But I’m giving it a shot and it’s an original and it’s not based on any book or short story or anything that Ian Fleming had done. Although it is based on Ian Fleming ideas. And it starts right after the last one, two minutes after Casino Royale this movie starts.
Q: Do you think the Broccoli’s might go back to pre-existing material or movies that have been done before?
Paul Haggis: I don’t know, I’d like to. I think it would be great. There have been some terrific books but you’d have to ask them.
Q: The Broccoli’s have gone on record saying they wanted this movie to be funnier after the last one. Is that not true?
Paul Haggis: That’s not true.
Q: Good, cause I liked the last one (the room laughs).
Paul Haggis: They were misquoted I’m sure.
Q: I wanted to know with you writing Bond, do you get a lot of notes or do you have a lot of freedom?
Paul Haggis: Lot of freedom. We work together on the story for a long time then they let me go. Marc is also being very supportive and he’s a wonderful director. I’m really happy working with him.

So Bond 22 picks up 2 minutes after Casino Royale. Good. I was hoping that the next film could just keep building directly onto what Casino Royale gave us.
