"Back in the day" Playboy magazine pushed the limits of "smut" versus "art" straight into a corner and the only way they could display a

The "industrial imitation in life" you mention took over from there. I recently saw a TV documentary film about an increasing number of women who have their labia surgically removed. Every one of the women they interviewed said it was either
(1)the centre-fold model portrayed in nudie magazines that motivated them - or
(2)"to make it more attractive for their boyfriend/husband". The interesting thing is (but no surprise to me!) is that interviewing those boyfriends/husbands revealed that none of them had been consulted nor had they consented to the operation.
