Well, from what my uncle told me, it's actually *more* comfortable to have two separate beds next to each other. This is because if you (or your spouse) moves around a lot and bounces the bed when they turn over, the other person won't feel it since they are on a separate mattress. I don't know if the mattresses would slide apart, since some of them have one big boxspring on the bottom and then two smaller beds on top... and perhaps something holding the two together, so they don't slide? I have no idea.
But I'd be afraid of the crack, too.
