Yeah, the big gym chains, Bally and Gold's, are at least as bad as used car dealer. Gold's Gym actually forged my signature on a membership form and tried to lock me into a longer contract than I initially paid for. No kidding. If you are there just for a 'trial' membership, just don't sign your name to anything while in the club. Don't 'sign in'.
They'll probably want to give you a 'fitness' consultation which will amount to a 30-60 sales pitch. Just say, "No thanks, I just want to try out the gym." You are much better off working out with your body weight as resistance in the park. If you absolutely have to join a gym, see if you can't find a local gym than is not part of a chain. They might have some of the same problems, but it is less likely in my experience.
