His overall message to his daughter was not to be influenced by anyone else and to make up her own mind about the subject at hand.
However what he was trying to say was to give her advice on how to do it, and in that advice he was 'telling' her to follow what he was saying, because he's her father and fell entitled to at least give her that or for what ever reason. Point being he was telling her to "listen" here and "not listen" to anyone on that subject as to not be influenced.

Thanks 3stood, just symantics. In other words while I believe in God, I've never forced that view on her. I should have said "dont take my word for it, make up your own mind."
