I found an Irish goldsmith who has a small workshop and an even smaller showroom. He does custom Celtic designs and gets the diamonds set for you. I saved about $300 over what the ring is valued at and I imagine it would have cost buckets more if I bought something similar at a corporate chain store--not to mention the fact that I wouldn't have found this ring there anyway. Oh, the ring was made in about a week, too.
If you want both value and worth, I suggest going the custom tradesman route as I did. Then you can ask for what you want, rather than ask for what they have.
Just be sure to do the usual checking out and shopping around, of course.
