Wanted: Downtempo primer

Thanks to Sirius, I've recently become addicted to Chill (Channel 35), and it is described by Sirius as "downtempo electronica." Usually when I listen to music I tend to channel-hop pretty badly, but when I hit Chill I can stay there for hours. And I don't know ANY of these artists or songs.

This music really speaks to what's inside me and I want to know a lot more about it. However, I hate jumping in on something in the middle, so I need a Downtempo Primer. What's the history of this music? Who were the pioneers? Who are the classics and who are the cutting edgers? Which would be the CD's that are considered "must-haves" for this music?
